Today in English class we had a simulated peace summit between characters from the movie Promises. We had different people propose different laws and we voted (in character) on whether to pass them or not. Some of the characters (such as Moishe, an Israeli settler in the West Bank) had more conservative views than people like Sanabel, a refugee in Deheishe refugee camp.
The first thing that we voted on was what rights Palestinian refugees should have. The votes passed were that Palestinians should have equal rights as Israelis (suggested by Mahmoud, an Israeli Arab living in East Jerusalem) and that Palestinians should have the right to travel freely through Israel (suggested by Faraj, a boy living in Deheishe refugee camp).
The next thing we voted on was the status of Jerusalem. The vote that passed was that Jerusalem should an international "holy state" that each country can share (suggested by Faraj).
The next topic was the status of the West Bank and Gaza. The vote that was that Israel should return the land taken in the 1967 war (suggested by Daniel and Yarko, twins from Israel).
The topic after that was U.S. aid to Israel, and the vote that passed was that the U.S. should provide the same aid to both sides.
I think that the first vote is good because currently Palestinians don't have the same access to food, water, and shelter as Israelis. Also, many Palestinians lived in Israel before the 1967 war and now they can't return to their homes.
I think the second vote is reasonable because the city is holy to Christianity, Judaism, and Islam so no one nation should have the right to own it, but every single person should have the right to enter it.
The third vote passed is also good because when Israel joined the UN, one of the conditions was that Israel should return all the land taken during the 1967 war, which it hasn't yet done.
The fourth vote was also fair because currently, the U.S. gives about 2 billion dollars worth of military and humanitarian aid to Israel but only gives $200,000,000 to Palestine. If you do the math, Israel gets 10 times the amount of aid Palestine gets.
If all these votes passed in real life, I think the peace process would be much quicker, easier, and less bloody.
